How to Throw Boomerangs
When Will it End?
by Jim Mayfield @ 1996
If you have been involved with boomerangs for long you may have asked yourself this question. Your spouses certainly have. After many years in this sport I still ask myself that question, especially when I'm leaving the field from a particularly long session with bruised hands, sore knee, pulled shoulder, and in a complete state of Zen bliss.
If you build these wonderful objects you may have noticed after a day of building them, that you can't even carry on an intelligent conversation because your mind is totally absorbed in aerodynamics and weight balancing. You have probably found that designing new shapes and different aerodynamics critically impede your social skills because of the obsessive nature of aerodynamic theory. If your conversational skills are not being hampered by the creation of these flying pieces of wood, then you probably notice your close friends leaving the room when someone mentions the word boomerang. And after you've given your hour long dissertation on the subject, you check your pulse and excuse yourself, wondering "when will it end?".
For me, the joy of this sport comes in building them and in recreational throwing. Creating momentary sculptures in the sky against a blazing sunset with the mountains in the distance.
I live too far away from anywhere to compete much, so for me it's pure recreation. Take a 40 to 60 yard 'rang and get in a groove catch and throw in one fluid movement move around the field never miss a beat Achieving oneness with the flight!
WHEN WILL IT END? I pray never!
